My Experience Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Mafia Island
I stayed right by Kilindoni, close to the beach where tours depart. Just after sunrise, the traditional dhow boats prepare, locals scan the surface, and the water is completely calm.
The lookout shouts:
“Papa! Papa!” (Whale shark in Swahili)
You grab your fins, sit on the edge, and slide in quietly.
Below you, a 5–7 metre gentle giant appears, spotted like a galaxy. Unlike diving, where you’re often far below the action, whale sharks in Mafia are just 1 metre under the surface, feeding peacefully.

Flying is the easiest and most reliable way to get to Mafia Island, especially if you’re short on time.
Two airlines operate daily flights to Mafia Island from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar:

Flight time: 30–45 minutes
Price: €80–€130 one-way
Luggage limit: 15–20 kg (strict for small aircraft)
Flights land directly at Kilindoni Airport, the main arrival point on Mafia Island.
This is the best option if you want a smooth, stress-free arrival, especially if you’re planning to swim with whale sharks or dive.
⛴ By Ferry — Budget Option Only (My Honest Personal Experience)
Taking the Mafia Island ferry from Dar es Salaam is much cheaper than flying, but it is long, unpredictable, and not suitable for tight itineraries. Choose this route only if you’re traveling very cheaply or want a local experience.
⚠️ Important: The Mafia Island Ferry Does Not Run Daily
From my own trip, I learned that the ferry from Nyamisati to Mafia Island has no fixed schedule.
Departures depend on:
- tides
- weather
- demand
- whether the boat fills up
When I arrived, the ferry wasn’t running that day. I had to stay overnight in a small hotel near the station — very common for this route.
🚌 Bus from Dar es Salaam to Nyamisati (Ferry Port)
There is usually a bus leaving Dar es Salaam around 11:00 AM.

- Roads are decent, but delays are normal
- You may need to overnight if the ferry is not running

Although the route can be done in one day, my own journey took a day and a half due to ferry schedule issues.

Hello Angela! Mafia island is amazing and I am sure you will enjoy it. However it is not that easy to travel as the island is not yet a big tourist destination. For diving you will be staying most likely in Utende and that is a bit costly as you need to pay the daily national park fee on top of your accommodation, even if you will not be diving. You can also stay in Kinondoni, and I recommend that for the days you will be doing the whale shark snorkeling tour as the whale shark snorkeling tours leave from there. The island is amazing, raw and unexplored but the issue is that there are not many accommodation options in the island. There is a woman offering Airbnb accommodation Bweni, on the North, but it is quite pricey. The best is to arrange a tour to visit the beaches up North or arrange a motorbike with a driver, while staying in Kinondoni. I stayed in Afro Beach Bungalows and it was amazing, also stayed up North but I paid too much for not having electricity, running water and have to pay super expensive meals and drinks for not so much quality. There was cheap food in the village but it was far away.
