THINGS TO DO IN ICELAND IN OCTOBER AND JUNE

Shall I visit Iceland? Has this question been popping up in your mind and you do not know really what to expect of your trip? I visited Iceland my first time in June with a group trip and the second time in October and I drove alone around the country.

You have come to right place as I have traveled twice to this amazing destination and I was in your shoes before I embarked on my first trip there. There plenty of things to in Iceland in October and June.

I had always imagined Iceland as a land almost covered in ice, as many people I know still do. But this is not the only thing Iceland has to offer. It is for me one of the most fascinating places I have visited and even if I have been there twice I still want to go back.

Find here some of the reasons why Iceland is worth a visit or two:

And do not forget to visit Reykjavik, check here this complete Reykjavik city guide:

1. The Northern lights

Iceland is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. You can do this either by yourself or on a guided tour. And it is one of the best things to in Iceland in October, as the cold is still not so intense as during the Winter months and there are many opportunities to the famous Northern lights.

2. The midnight sun

Iceland is located very close to the Artic Circle. As a consequence of the Earth axis tilting towards the Sun in Summer and away from the Sun in Winter, the polar day and night are six months long. The midnight sun peaks during the Summer Solstice, around June 24th.  Experiencing the midnight sun is not only about the extra amount of energy you get from being overexposed to light, but also the different colors you can observe in nature, due to the different angle of the sun rays hitting Earth at this latitude.

Experience the midnight Sun is the best thing to do in Iceland in June.

3.  The waterfalls

Waterfalls in Iceland are impressive, in beauty and size. And there are many, many of them. One of the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland is Gullfoss and you can visit it while driving Iceland’s Golden circle.

4. The open space

Iceland is the less dense populated country in Europe and one of least dense populated countries in the world. It is the perfect place to feel your personal space and relax. You will very much appreciate this fact if you live in a very densely populated area. This quality makes it the perfect place for meditation. In fact my first trip to Iceland was an organized yoga trip.

5. The very peculiar street signs

Some places in Iceland use very peculiar traffic signs, such as the heart shaped traffic lights in Akuyeri and the speed limit dolls in the Westfjords.

6. The Fjords

Fjords are formed by glaciers and they are indentations in the shoreline. There are a total of 109 fjords in Iceland. My favourite ones being the westfjords.

7. The geothermal baths

Visiting the Blue Lagoon is one of the top activities when visiting Iceland. It is the most well known geothermal bath in Iceland, however there some others such as the Secret Lagoon and the Mývatn Nature Baths

8. The rainbows

There is a big chance of seeing rainbows in Iceland, either due to rain or to the light refraction on any of its stunning waterfalls.

9. The elves and fairies

More than 50 % of the Icelandic population believe that “the elusive” people, fairies or elves exists. I was not lucky enough to encounter any of them but I was deeply respectful when I visited the beautiful volcanic coast formations called “The Gnomes library and cathedral. “

10.  The glaciers

Not all Iceland is covered on ice as its name suggests, but there are  still beautiful glaciers to visit such a Jökulsárlón.

11. The black sand beach

There is a surreal black sand beach covered in icebergs called “ Diamond Beach.

12. The whales

Whale watching near Husavik while crossing the Artic Circle is an activity that can be combined.

13. The volcanos

There are several volcanos in Iceland and volcanic parks where you can get lost admiring the volcanic formations. Check out hiking inside a volcano called Thrihnukagigur

14. The Icelandic horses

The Icelandic horse is unique, and seeing them and riding them along a beautiful landscape is worth a trip in itself if you love horses and horse riding.

 15. The food

Eating out in Iceland is quite expensive but luckily most accommodation has a kitchen. It is still worth though to give a try to heir delicious mussels cooked in beer for one time.
