Last Updated on December 5, 2025 by Pilar

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Mafia island was one of the most unforgettable experiences I had in Tanzania.

This small, quiet island south of Zanzibar has something rare:
a resident population of juvenile whalesharks that feed in the shallow waters just outside Kilindoni. Mafia offers months of consistent sightings and calm conditions ideal for every level of swimmer.

This guide is the most complete Whale Shark Mafia Island resource online, covering everything from simple marine biology and the science behind why whale sharks gather here, to what actually happens on tours, the full breakdown of travel logistics, prices and safety, plus where to stay. It also includes a comparison with Zanzibar and Mozambique and the most comprehensive set of FAQs available anywhere

A video does not lie, and whale sharks encounters while snorkeling in Mafia island was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

A short look at our real whale shark experience in Mafia Island: first on the boat, then underwater swimming with the whale sharks.

Why Whale Sharks Stay in Mafia Island

Most whale sharks migrate thousands of kilometres across oceans. Mafia Island is unusual because its population stays local for long periods, creating one of the most dependable whale shark hotspots on earth.

Here’s why:

1. Plankton-Rich Waters

The bay near Kilindoni is shallow and warm. When the Kaskazi (northeast) monsoon begins in October, nutrient-rich waters rise to the surface and create massive plankton blooms.

Whale sharks follow food—so they stay.

2. Juvenile Aggregation Zone

The majority of shark encounters here are juveniles between 4–8m, which is typical in coastal nursery or feeding grounds.

Scientists believe Mafia Island acts as a “training ground” for young whale sharks before they begin long migrations.

3. Gentle Currents = Easy Feeding

Unlike Tofo (Mozambique) or Galápagos, Mafia is sheltered.
Calm currents let the sharks feed close to the surface for hours.

This is why snorkelers—not divers—get the best encounters.

4. Perfect Light Conditions

Plankton rises early in the morning.
This is why tours leave at 7:00 AM—the sharks are feeding right at the surface.

5. Reliable Sightings (80–90% in Peak Season)

This is one of the highest success rates globally.

Compared to other destinations:

DestinationSeasonReliabilityNotes
Mafia Island, TanzaniaOct–Feb⭐ 80–90%Resident juveniles
MaldivesDec–Apr⭐ 60%Depends on currents
Mexico (Holbox)Jun–Sep⭐ 70%Crowded
Oslob (Philippines)Year-round❌ 100% but unethical (feeding)

Mafia Island = ethical, reliable, uncrowded.

My Experience Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Mafia Island

I stayed right by Kilindoni, close to the beach where tours depart. Just after sunrise, the traditional dhow boats prepare, locals scan the surface, and the water is completely calm.

The lookout shouts:
“Papa! Papa!” (Whale shark in Swahili)

You grab your fins, sit on the edge, and slide in quietly.

Below you, a 5–7 metre gentle giant appears, spotted like a galaxy. Unlike diving, where you’re often far below the action, whale sharks in Mafia are just 1 metre under the surface, feeding peacefully.

A whale shark moves gracefully near the surface, followed closely by remoras — a common sight during Mafia Island whale shark excursions.

Some of my favourite moments:

  • seeing a shark rise vertically in “active feeding mode”
  • watching remoras glide under its belly
  • hearing the engine cut as everyone jumps in
  • swimming alongside it in complete silence

This is one of the most intimate wildlife encounters in Tanzania, and it feels raw, wild, and surprisingly serene.

Best Time to See Whale Sharks in Mafia Island

Peak season: October – February

This is when the plankton is thickest and sightings are strongest.

You can see whale sharks year-round, but outside the peak the success rate drops.

Weather, Wind & Tide Tips (Local Insight)

  • Wind:
Early morning is calm. Afternoon wind (Kaskazi) makes boats rockier.
  • Tides:
High tide = sharks near the surface.
    Low tide = deeper feeding.
  • Cloudy days:
Lower visibility but sharks feed more actively.
  • Rain:
    Rain doesn’t affect sightings—only comfort.

These are things only locals and long-term travellers learn.

Where Is Mafia Island?

Mafia Island is located 120 km south of Zanzibar and is part of the Mafia Archipelago.
It is quiet, rural, and protected by Mafia Island Marine Park, one of the oldest marine reserves in Tanzania.

This is why the water remains so rich with life.

How to Get to Mafia Island (Flights, Ferries, Money, SIM & Practical Logistics)

✈️ By Air — The Fastest & Most Reliable Way to Reach Mafia Island

Flying is the easiest and most reliable way to get to Mafia Island, especially if you’re short on time.

Two airlines operate daily flights to Mafia Island from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar:

  • Coastal Aviation
  • Auric Air

Flight time: 30–45 minutes
Price: €80–€130 one-way
Luggage limit: 15–20 kg (strict for small aircraft)

Flights land directly at Kilindoni Airport, the main arrival point on Mafia Island.

This is the best option if you want a smooth, stress-free arrival, especially if you’re planning to swim with whale sharks or dive.

By Ferry — Budget Option Only (My Honest Personal Experience)

Taking the Mafia Island ferry from Dar es Salaam is much cheaper than flying, but it is long, unpredictable, and not suitable for tight itineraries. Choose this route only if you’re traveling very cheaply or want a local experience.

⚠️ Important: The Mafia Island Ferry Does Not Run Daily

From my own trip, I learned that the ferry from Nyamisati to Mafia Island has no fixed schedule.
Departures depend on:

  • tides
  • weather
  • demand
  • whether the boat fills up

When I arrived, the ferry wasn’t running that day. I had to stay overnight in a small hotel near the station — very common for this route.

🚌 Bus from Dar es Salaam to Nyamisati (Ferry Port)

There is usually a bus leaving Dar es Salaam around 11:00 AM.

  • Duration: 3–4 hours
  • Roads are decent, but delays are normal
  • You may need to overnight if the ferry is not running

Ferry from Nyamisati to Mafia Island

The ferry generally departs around 15:00, but this time changes often.

Ferry duration: ~3 hours
Arrival: usually just after sunset in Kilindoni

On my trip, the crossing was comfortable enough — there was hot food, coffee, and very friendly local passengers. Watching the sunset as we approached Mafia Island was a beautiful moment.

Realistic Total Travel Time: 1–1.5 Days

Although the route can be done in one day, my own journey took a day and a half due to ferry schedule issues.
Be flexible, and don’t plan whale-shark tours on the same day you arrive.

📍 By Organized Tour — The Easiest Way to Handle the Ferry

If you want someone to handle the bus, ferry, schedule checks, and last-minute changes, I personally recommend:

Bakari — Tanzanian Wanderlust
Phone & WhatsApp: +255 655 385 109

He can confirm ferry times (the real ones!), reserve tickets, and organize everything door-to-door.

💰 Money, ATMs & Payments on Mafia Island

  • Mafia Island has only one ATM, and it’s often offline or out of cash.
  • Bring cash from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.
  • Hotels often accept card, but local tours, lodges, and transport are usually cash only.

Tip: withdraw enough Tanzanian shillings before leaving the mainland.

📱 SIM Cards & Mobile Coverage on Mafia Island

Buy your SIM in Dar es Salaam — it’s cheaper and easier.

Best networks for Mafia Island:

  • Airtel
  • Vodacom

These two have the strongest signal around Kilindoni town and the whale-shark departure area.

  1. Hi! I am thinking about going to Mafia island for a few days because I am a passionate diver and I would like to see whale sharks again. I have been reading your article about the snorkeling trip and the experience looks amazing. If you have time, I would like to know a few thinks about the island from someone who has been living there 🙂 Is it very complicated and expensive to move around the island? Is it worth to stay there for a few days instead of Zanzibar?
Thank you very much for your tips! I’ve also read your article about the Usambara mountains where I a staying now and it was very helpful.

    1. Hello Angela! Mafia island is amazing and I am sure you will enjoy it. However it is not that easy to travel as the island is not yet a big tourist destination. For diving you will be staying most likely in Utende and that is a bit costly as you need to pay the daily national park fee on top of your accommodation, even if you will not be diving. You can also stay in Kinondoni, and I recommend that for the days you will be doing the whale shark snorkeling tour as the whale shark snorkeling tours leave from there. The island is amazing, raw and unexplored but the issue is that there are not many accommodation options in the island. There is a woman offering Airbnb accommodation Bweni, on the North, but it is quite pricey. The best is to arrange a tour to visit the beaches up North or arrange a motorbike with a driver, while staying in Kinondoni. I stayed in Afro Beach Bungalows and it was amazing, also stayed up North but I paid too much for not having electricity, running water and have to pay super expensive meals and drinks for not so much quality. There was cheap food in the village but it was far away.
